Pink pound conference in Torremolinos hotel

ExpoGays, the International Fair of Gay Business and Tourism, will be held for the first time later this year in Spain in the Torremolinos Conference and Exhibition Centre on the weekend of the 15-17 October. It is expected that there will be over 180 stands taking part spread over two floors and taking up just over 5,000 sqm of space in the exhibition centre. According to the organisers of ExpoGays this will be the largest concentration of “gay friendly” businesses ever gathered under the same roof in Spain. The aim of the conference is to allow professionals and individuals to gather together in order to stimulate and promote business sectors in which lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT ) groups are present. The event is expected to be visited by over 10,000 people from Spain and abroad.

The organisers say that many companies will be represented at the fair covering the full spectrum of activities involved in the tourism sector. They have received confirmed bookings from tour operators, travel agencies, transport companies, hotels, spas, restaurants and the rural tourism sector in Spain among others.

According to ExpoGays “there is a market of somewhere between 39 and 45 million gay consumers in the twelve countries with the highest purchasing power, representing 6 % of the population of these nations”. The statement went on to say that “in Spain there are three million gays, with a purchasing power of around 72,000 million euro, but despite this very few companies have offers oriented specifically to gay customers and they are concentrated in very specific sectors such as hotels, tourism and fashion”.

Gay tourists reportedly spend 30 percent more money on hotels in Spain than the rest of the population. Gay tourists from the UK, US, Italy and Germany usually stay in the destinations in Spain that are popular among members of the gay community like Sitges, Ibiza, Gran Canaria, Benidorm and Torremolinos. On average they spend around 130 € per room per night in hotels. Besides the resorts on the coast there are also some hotels promoting themselves as gay-friendly in the main cities of Spain like Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Bilbao and Seville.

As an added attraction Gayvision will take place during the fair in Torremolinos in October. This will be the the first national Gay Song Contest ever to be held in Spain. The contest will include a representative from each one of the 17 autonomous communities in Spain, and the winner will be chosen by a jury comprising representatives from all over Spain.
