Kings, presidents, prime ministers, artists and judges are among many of the guests who have stayed in hotel Los Fariones on Lanzarote over the 45 years since it opened in 1966.

Hotel Los Fariones has not only been responsible for pioneering the tourism sector in Lanzarote but has also attracted a parade of personalities from around the world to stay on the island. This Lanzarote hotel is located in the privileged area of Puerto del Carmen, between Playa Grande and Playa Chica, and boasts spectacular views over the Atlantic Ocean.

King Hussein of Jordan and King Olav (father of the present King Harald of Norway), former Prime Ministers of Spain Adolfo Suarez and Felipe Gonzalez, are just some of the well-known personalities who have stayed in Los Fariones over the years. The managing director of the hotel, Bienvenido Saavedra, remembers “a secret meeting being held at the hotel in the early eighties between Felipe González and Helmut Schmidt, the former German Chancellor and leader of the Social Democratic Party, so journalists would not be able to find them.”

Record occupancy rates in Lanzarote hotels

Occupancy levels among the hotels in Lanzarote reached historic highs during the first quarter of 2011 driven up both by the crises in Tunisia, Egypt and other North African countries and by the beginnings of a recovery in some European markets important for tourism on the island.

In spite of the strong occupancy rates, entrepreneurs involved in the tourism sector in this part of Spain recognize that hotel prices are still very low and are now at levels not seen in Lanzarote for 25 years. According to a spokesman for the Association of Hotel and Apartment Owners in Lanzarote (Asolan), Francisco Martínez: “If guests were able to book a room in a hotel in Lanzarote for 5,000 pesetas in 1986 they can also get it nowadays for €30 per night”. The hotel association points out that hotel prices in Lanzarote have declined by some 22 percent over the last three years.

According to Asolan the average occupancy rate recorded last March in Lanzarote was 83%, a figure last recorded for that month in 2003. The hotels on the island achieved average occupancy of levels of 77.99 percent during April, 15 percent higher than the same period in 2010 when occupancy levels were only 62.52 percent. According to Asolan the celebration of Easter in…Click to read more about Lanzarote Hotels

Expansion of the “all-inclusive” hotel sector in Lanzarote

Recently, hotels offering all-inclusive packages have been taking a greater and greater share of the total hotel accommodation available in Lanzarote. Year after year, demand for this type of tourism has been steadily growing all over Spain and many tour operators are now demanding that hotels provide this type of deal in order to satisfy the demand that exists from this kind of visitor. The Tourist Business Association of Lanzarote (Aetur) estimates that over 30 percent of all the hotels in Lanzarote now offer this type of service, whilst if we go back only as far as 2009 only 25 percent of hotels in Lanzarote offered this option.

“There is a very high percentage of hotels that now offer the all-inclusive service option. In specific areas, such as Playa Blanca, there are hardly any hotels that are not all inclusive”, the president of Aetur, Victoriano Elvira, stated. In recent months several additional establishments have chosen to include this option to compliment their existing services. Among others, the Occidental Grand Teguise Playa hotel, La Geria hotel and two Riu hotels in Puerto del Carmen have started to offer the all-inclusive service, with the latest addition being the Hotel Beatriz Costa Teguise.

Lanzarote hotels show signs of recovery in August

Demand for accommodation from tourists staying in the hotels and apartments of Lanzarote led to occupancy rates of nearly 80% during the month of August confirming a tentative recovery of the sector in this part of Spain. According to the Association of Hotel and Apartment Owners of Lanzarote (Asolan) this level of occupancy was achieved thanks to a reduction of some 25% in the overall price of accommodation on the island.

Owners of hotels in Lanzarote confirmed that the number of reservations was higher than in August last year at 78.43% and, although this figure is still seven percentage points lower than that achieved in 2008,  Asolan welcomed the positive outcome of the main month of the summer season. Asolan went on to state that if the hotel sector in Lanzarote managed to attract a greater number of visitors it was because of the “offers and promotions they had launched to be more competitive in these times of economic crisis in Spain. However, these strategies also naturally meant achieving lower profit margins”.

The manager of the Occidental Allegro Oasis hotel, Marino Orlandi, stated that the occupancy rate of his hotel was 86 percent in August and, on average, the majority of guests stayed for nine days. Adolfo del Rio, manager of the…Click to read more about Lanzarote Hotels
