Hotel prices in Spain 9% lower in November

The average price of hotels in Spain decreased by around 9 percent in November, that’s according to the monthly THPI survey carried out recently by travel portal Trivago in Spain. Although a decline in prices is considered normal at this time of year, due to the fact that we are now firmly in what is considered the low season, nevertheless the percentage fall was higher than in October when hotel rates fell by some 6 percent across Spain.

The biggest drop in prices was among hotels in the region of La Rioja in northern Spain where prices fell by some 21 percent. This was followed by hotels in Andalusia where prices were 18% lower, then Catalonia down 15% and then the Basque country and Galicia, both down 12%. At this time of the year it looks like some of the cheapest hotel rooms in Spain can be found in the regions of Murcia and Galicia, where rooms can be had for an average of €64 and €63 respectively.

In contrast, the most expensive hotels in Spain in November were those on the Balearic Islands where a night in a hotel would set you back €110 on average, then Catalonia at €108 per night, and then came the hotels in Madrid and the Canary Islands at €98 a night in both regions. The hotels in both the Balearic and Canary islands were the only ones in Spain that actually increased their rates over the previous month and did so by 28% and 15% respectively.

Once again Barcelona was ranked as the city with the highest hotel prices in Spain, ahead of other Spanish cities which can usually maintain high prices, such as Palma de Mallorca at €110, San Sebastian at €107 and Madrid at €102 per night.

Due to price declines in many cities in Spain in November, Spanish hotels are now among the cheapest in Europe, with prices similar to those in Eastern Europe, where cities like Krakow, Budapest and Sofia have average hotel prices of €59, €61 and €71 respectively. The rates for hotels in urban destinations in Spain are much lower than other big European cities like London or Paris, where average hotel prices are €205 and €166. Other  European capitals with similar rates to those in Spain include Rome with average prices of €116, Istanbul at €111, Berlin at €87, Lisbon €85 or Athens, where it costs an average of €82 a night to stay in a hotel.
