The tourism sector in Barcelonahas survived the crisis which started in 2009 better than most other businesses in Spain. That’s according to the ‘ Report of the Barcelona hotels market ‘, conducted by Global Bric consultants. The report concluded that there was a significant growth in hotel reservations in the city, with more than 330,000 new bookings in Barcelona hotels in 2009.
In relation to revenue per available room (RevPAR ) hotels in Barcelona remain at the top of the Spanish hotel league. The report also notes the intention of the hoteliers to maintain their rates at current levels despite the recent increase in VAT announced by the Government in Spain.
The report by Global Bric states that Barcelona is a pioneer in refunding VAT to tourists form all over the world and the office located at Plaza de Catalunya has returned a million euros in purchases to visitors from outside the euro zone, who have spent at least one overnight stay in this city in Spain.
There is also optimism among the hotels in Barcelona in relation to investment levels and, despite the current financial difficulties in Spain, the level of investment by medium-sized businesses in the sector has actually increased. In the last six months five new hotels have been secured in Barcelona, which will add five hundred rooms to the accommodation available in the city.
